Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s training camp ahead of the team’s Nations League match against Denmark, adding uncertainty around the captain’s immediate future with the national side.

The 41-year-old forward departed the camp on Wednesday after discussions with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

The development follows a difficult period for the Portugal captain. Ronaldo was left on the bench for the entire 2-1 victory over Norway and did not feature despite being available for selection.

He also trained separately from the rest of the squad in the days that followed.

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has denied that there was a serious dispute between him and Ronaldo. Jesus said there had been no refusal by the forward to train and played down suggestions of a major confrontation.

Ronaldo’s departure has nevertheless attracted significant attention because of his importance to Portugal.

The forward has been the central figure in the national team for more than two decades. He is Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player and has helped the country win major international trophies, including the European Championship in 2016.

Portugal is now preparing for its next Nations League fixture without its captain.

The team faces Denmark on Thursday before another meeting with Norway on October 4.

Ronaldo’s decision does not amount to an announcement of international retirement. Instead, the forward has indicated that he intends to explain his reasons at a later stage.

His absence leaves Portugal facing questions about the situation surrounding its most recognizable player as the team continues its Nations League campaign.

For now, the focus is on Ronaldo’s promised explanation and whether he will return to the national team for future matches.
